The media is all atwitter this morning at the possibility that the government could shut down at midnight tonight. It likely wouldn’t be nearly as big of a deal as the punditry and the politicians make it out to be – after all, we survived two previous shutdowns in 1995 and 1996, neither of which had a major effect on most Americans.
The politics is ratcheting up. Republicans are being accused of pretty much everything the Democrats can think to accuse them of: fighting a “war on women,” engaging in a second “civil war,” preventing women from getting cancer screenings, and my personal favorite, “bombing innocent civilians.”
For the record, I know that last quote is taken slightly out of context…but the accusation is so outrageous, I just couldn’t pass it up.
The truth of the matter is, the GOP is doing what they were elected to do: cut federal spending. They should take a lesson from the President: sit the Democrats down at the negotiating table, and in front of the C-SPAN cameras, point a finger in their faces and tell them “we won the election.” After all, that’s been the Democrats’ attitude since they took control of Congress during the Bush administration. The Democrats always believe that they have a mandate as soon as they have even the slimmest of majorities, then turn around and act like victimized puppy dogs if a Republican majority tries to rein in their reckless spending even by a little bit.
I think this video sums it up the best…you can’t beat a Congressman speaking the truth with Led Zeppelin references thrown in.
