Tolerance Is Now Bigotry

Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame has made some waves by sounding off on his beliefs in an interview with GQ Magazine. The Robertsons, who star in one of the most-watched and highest-rated shows on cable television, have never been shy about expressing their beliefs – in fact, they have made it clear that the reason they are on TV at all is in order to share their Christian faith.

So what has caused all of the controversy? Well, since their rise to fame, the Robertsons have gotten tons of requests for interviews and speaking engagements, and Phil Robertson, the patriarch of the family, recently met with a reporter from GQ for an interview. This is the quote from Phil Robertson from the GQ article that has caused such a stir:

“It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.” 

There are a few things to note about this from the get-go. For starters, the quote is presented entirely out of context – just with a note from the author about how this was an example of how controversial Phil Robertson can be – a side of him that doesn’t make it onto the show (heck, A&E was caught editing out references to Jesus in the Robertsons’ prayers at the end of the show, and trying to do away with the prayers altogether, because they were afraid non-Christians would be insulted…so there’s no way anything like this would ever make it on).
