2013: The Year Of Unaccountability

They used to call Ronald Reagan “The Teflon President.”  It seemed that no matter what scandals the Reagan administration came up against, nothing seemed to stick.  But if anything, 2013 has shown us that Barack Obama has the power of Teflon like no other president in our nation’s history.

Looking back on 2013, it was a year of unanswered scandals. It truly has been pathetic watching the news media going through the same pattern time after time, allowing the Obama administration to get away with pretty much whatever they want.

It actually started on September 11, 2012 with Benghazi. Thanks to the administration’s cover-up and obstructionism, we never really got anywhere close to finding out what really happened until well into 2013 – which was exactly what the president wanted. By the time the truth started to come out, we were treated to Jay Carney snidely telling the press corps that “that was a long time ago,” and President Obama describing the deaths of four Americans as “bumps in the road.” Instead of pressing the issue, the president’s willing accomplices in the media just let the issue die, and to this day we still do not know where the president was during the 7 hour battle, or who ordered military forces to stand down…and Susan Rice, the woman sent out to spread the administration’s lies about who was responsible for the attack, is enjoying her promotion – the reward she received for lying to America.

Then was the revelation that the Obama administration used the IRS in an attempt to manipulate the 2012 election by keeping conservative organizations in limbo over their applications for 501(c)3 status. Over the course of the Congressional investigation, it was revealed that the scandal went to the highest levels of the IRS, and may have even originated from the White House. But like Benghazi, this issue was allowed to die out. It wasn’t important that criminal actions had been undertaken by high-level IRS administrators as the Obama administration attempted to manipulate a national election. No one seems to care that the person in charge at the IRS, who by all indications engaged in criminal behavior herself, was allowed to retire and is now collecting a taxpayer-funded pension.

And that wasn’t the only way the Obama administration manipulated the presidential election – As it happens, the sudden, precipitous drop in the unemployment rate right before the election was entirely engineered to make President Obama look good – a fact that major media organizations didn’t consider notable enough to report more than once or twice…and that after anyone who alleged such manipulation at the time was roundly denounced as a crazy conspiracy theorist by much of the media elite.

Oh, by the way, more Mexicans were killed with guns trafficked to Mexican drug cartels last year, and Attorney General Eric Holder still hasn’t answered his outstanding charges of Contempt of Congress…but it seems that Democrats only care about Mexicans once they have entered the United States illegally.

The biggest scandal has been Obamacare – for Republicans, this is the gift that keeps on giving, and will keep on giving for years to come.

President Obama has taken the Affordable Care Act as his license to legislate from the White House at will – maybe he thinks that, since the bill is commonly referred to as “Obamacare,” that it belongs to him, and he can do as he pleases.  Unfortunately for him, the Constitution of the United States says otherwise (not that Constitutional restrictions have ever truly mattered to him).  President Obama has changed the Affordable Care Act at his whim, basically just sticking his finger in the breeze to find out what is making him most unpopular at the moment, so that he can delay it until after the next election cycle.  In the meantime, he continues to spread the lie that people love Obamacare and that it’s the greatest thing to come to the health care industry since penicillin.

October’s roll-out of Healthcare.gov certainly generated a lot of headlines, but strangely, while it was (and continues to be) a topic of intense media focus, there has been no accountability for anyone in the Obama administration for this extremely expensive boondoggle.  The administration spent over $600 million for the original mess of a website, and has spent God-only-knows how much more for their “fix” that didn’t really fix anything – they just made the website break in a more user-friendly manner.  The news that IBM offered to build a world-class website for free was conveniently ignored by the mainstream media.  Put all of this together, and heads should have been rolling at the White House by now – at the very least, the entire Healthcare.gov website team should have been sacked, and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sibelius should be on a very short leash.  Instead, President Obama has repeatedly voiced his confidence in Sibelius, and has kept her in the top spot at HHS.

The deadline to sign up for Obamacare just passed a few days ago, so once again we have the excellence of Obamacare on full display.  For starters, the website crashed on the day of the deadline, prompting President Obama to decree an impromptu last-minute delay for people to sign up…but for those who were able to sign up, many can’t be sure that they did truly sign up, as the federal site still isn’t routing people’s information to insurance companies correctly.  Three years and (at least) a billion dollars later, and they still can’t get it right.

And that’s on top of the fact that the federal website still doesn’t include proper security protocols, and the site’s payment system still hasn’t been set up.

It’s sad that, this far into one of the most scandal-ridden administrations in American history, we the people have little recourse but to hope that eventually, someone in our government will finally do something about this out-of-control administration.

Throw in the administration’s punitive actions against the American people during the government shutdown, lying to try and draw America into a war in Syria, spying on American citizens and foreign allies, and easing sanctions on the Islamofascist regime in Iran, and it really makes you wonder how this Teflon President has stayed in office for this long.
